MASH MY WEEK! Summary of outstanding news about Internet, Technology, and Social Media from August 29 to September 4

This week we have several pieces of news about Twitter, the microblogging social network that continues to increase its popularity on the web. We will present all the Twitter news: from maximizing the scope of hashtags to Twitter contests and sponsored tweets.
But don’t forget that other social platforms are also essential to enhance online visibility, for example, blogs. Today, we will present Tumblr, now launching its Spanish version.

Enriching the experience of hashtags

The creation of hashtags or labels on Twitter is highly recommended for linking yourself or your brand to issues and ideas.
Conversation is preferable to just pushing information on the social networks. The objective is to connect with other users and establish reciprocal relationships: social platforms become the frames for such interchange. Under this paradigm, however, those using Twitter to promote themselves run the risk of being characterized as annoying or invasive if they do not adhere to the social networks’ rules, and just send information.
Joint.im (www.joint.im) is a group chat on Twitter that permits following all messages on a hashtag, while opening a chat to talk.
To register, you just have to login to your Twitter account.
Joint.im is very useful if you are following a live hashtag, taking the best tweets, and having conversation with others who are interested in the subject. It is also an excellent tool for providing better service and attention to your followers, since you can invite them to chat and to make inquiries and comments on certain subject. Finally, it can help you in a crisis, gathering all your followers on a chat to explain what happened.

Twitter users’ reactions to commercials

With the arrival of Promoted Tweets, advertisers wonder how users will react to getting advertisements on their timelines.
A study performed by Lab42 in August 2011 announced promising data for advertisers. The research showed that 11.1% of Twitter users in the United States use the microblogging social network to follow brands. Among other reasons, those surveyed answered that they use B to follow friends (17.4%), laugh (15.6%), stay informed (15.1%), and share news (13.9%).
Almost 50% of Twitter users follow between 1 and 10 brands; only 10.6% follow no brands; and 8.2% follow more than 50 brands.
Regarding Sponsored Tweets, users’ answers were also reassuring. Just 10.9% described them as annoying, while 24.8% were open to receiving announcements from brands they are interested in.
As advertisers are becoming more visible on Twitter, consumers seem to be more open to interaction through this channel.

Tumblr platform launches its Spanish version

The famous platform for publishing and sharing content on the net is now available in Spanish.
Tumblr is one of the most successful tools introduced during the last few years. It has enjoyed spectacular growth in number of visitors: from 4.2 million unique visits in July 2010 to 13.4 million in July 2011. This is a 218% increase according to a recent study by Comscore.
Tumblr is a very stylized and simple platform as opposed to the more complex Blogger and Wordpress. It is also distinguished by its versatility, since it allows publishing any type of content—including text, photos, videos, and audios—through any mobile device, application, or online. Finally, we must mention its social characteristics promoted by user interaction and social network integration.
