MASH MY WEEK! Summary of outstanding news about the internet, technology, and social media from August 15-21

Today when companies or marketing and communications professionals are planning online visibility strategies, they keep in mind the social media platforms. With so many social networks on the web, it is difficult to decide where to appear. Among the most popular sites are Facebook because of its number of users, Twitter for its informative nature, YouTube to share audiovisual material, and Foursquare for geolocation. They are all remarkable for their unique characteristics, but planning must be adapted to new trends.
This week we will talk about StumbleUpon, the leading social network for online traffic conduction. We will also comment on the new applications available to share and attract contacts to a Google+ profile.
Last but not least, we will present a short review of the latest Google Maps update.

StumbleUpon, the leading conductor of relevant content

StatCounter, a web data analysis service, revealed that StumbleUpon is the dominant source of online traffic among the most popular social networks worldwide.
StumbleUpon drives more than 50% of the relevant content on the Internet; Facebook comes second with 38.9% of the market, while other platforms like Reddit, YouTube, and Twitter got less than 4%.
These statistics are shocking, especially considering the number of each network’s users: StumbleUpon has only 12 million users while Facebook has 750 million. However, StumbleUpon’s influence is superior, and everything seems to indicate a continuation of this trend. The StumbleUpon plug-in recently exceeded a billon clicks.

Share your Google+ updates on your emails

All our personal and corporate information is on social platforms; we share everything about our businesses, products, and professional information there. For this reason, conducting web traffic toward our social profiles is a key to increased online visibility.
A practical, easy, and discreet way to communicate our accounts on the different online platforms is the icon representing each social network (linked to its corresponding URL) in our email signature.
Millions of users have created their own Google+ accounts, and to connect with other users on their social networks, they bet on this successful tactic of including the identifying symbols on their emails.
But the WiseStamp startup goes beyond that, offering the chance to show the Google+ user’s last update in the email body. This adds interest and attraction to your profile.
So far, the application is available only for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

Check the weather on Google Maps

Google has added a new function to its satellite map service, allowing users to check the weather forecast in any city in the world. The weather report includes temperature, winds, humidity, and whether it is night or day.
To use the service, go to Google Maps and select the “Weather” tab in the upper right-hand corner of the map.
The satellite image of the selected country or city selected will appear with the classic weather drawings and the current temperature. Clicking on a date icon will display the weather forecast for any of the following four days.
The weather information comes from weather.com and the United States Naval Research Laboratory.
